Task 2 - Analysis of animal remains from Lusitânia
Coordinator: Cleia Detry
Zooarchaeological analysis will focus on animal remains of Roman archaeological sites from Lusitania. A detailed methodology will be used, focused on gathering information on the animals consumed and managed in these locations. The analysis will include recording the number of identified specimens (NISP) by Taxa, registering and analyzing the parts of the skeleton (taxonomic and morphological information), recording information about bone fusion and dental wear pattern to build age profiles, gathering osteometric measurements and taphonomic evidence. The objectives of this task are: - To understand which animals are being consumed and if there are functional differences between sites (related to size and type of the site - urban or rural, industrial specialization vs. non-industrial). - To understand which animals are preferred for consuming and which ones are being used for secondary products and functions. - If artificial selection or introduction of new breeds is being used to produce the improvement of the animals studied, namely in the main domestic species such as cattle, sheep, goat and pig. |
